Custom Aluminum Tank Access Stair Installation
Project evaluation
The end user, responsible for maintaining a wastewater treatment facility, required a reliable and OSHA-compliant solution to access internal areas of multiple tanks. The project involved designing and installing aluminum staircases to provide safe, durable access to tanks while meeting specific incline and load requirements. SAFE-T-FAB was commissioned to design a custom solution that aligns with regulatory and operational standards.
Challenges & Requirements and design proposal
Compliance with Safety Standards: Ensure all installations met OSHA’s guidelines for stair design, particularly a consistent riser height and tread depth.
Custom Design for Specific Tanks: Create a solution adaptable to the unique dimensions and needs of the facility, including correct alignment with existing structures.
Durability & Weight Considerations: Use lightweight but strong materials, specifically aluminum, for ease of installation without compromising strength.
Limited Installation Window: Complete the project within an 8-10 week timeline to avoid disrupting facility operations.
Final Product
Upon approval, SAFE-T-FAB fabricated high-grade aluminum staircases with a mill finish for lightweight durability, ensuring OSHA compliance with uniform riser heights, tread depths, and grip strut steps for safety. Pre-assembled components validated the fit of the modular, three-segment design, standing off 28 inches from the tank wall. Shipped in six pieces from Pennsylvania to Jerseyville, IL , delivery was scheduled to minimize downtime at the wastewater treatment plant. On-site, specialized crews assembled the staircases, securing them to tanks at three points and installing leveling pads for stability, with optional permanent bolts for long-term fixation.
REsults & outcomes
Improved Accessibility: The new staircases offered safe and efficient access to internal areas, enhancing operational capabilities.
Compliance Achieved: All components met OSHA’s standards, ensuring long-term safety and reducing potential liability.
Efficiency: The modular design facilitated a straightforward installation, with minimal disruption to plant operations.
